Time Warp 1987: Part 3

September 22, 2017
00:0000:00

Time Warp: 1987: The Movies, 30 Years Later. Part 3.

Welcome to the Fandom Podcast Networks special presentation of

Time Warp: 1987, The Movies, 30 Years Later, Part 3.

In this special edition of Time Warp, your hosts Kevin Reitzel, Kyle Wagner, Erin Gill and Norman Lao will cover the year in movies for 1987 Part 3. Last year we made a case for 1986 being the best year in movies. But we were challenged! Could 1987 eclipse 1986? We will celebrate and debate this throughout our 4 part special.

Welcome to Part 3 of 4 of the Time Warp: 1987, The Movies. In the episode, we will cover the movies released in the months of July, August and September of 1987. Here is a small sample of the many movies we will cover in Part 3 of Time Warp: 1987:
-       Adventures In Babysitting

-       Robocop

-       The Lost Boys

-       La Bamba

-       Nowhere to Hide

-       Can't Buy Me Love

-       Dirty Dancing

-       Masters of the Universe

-       Fatal Attraction

-       The Princess Bride

1987 gave us a great year in movies. On this special presentation of the Time Warp, here on the Fandom Podcast Network, we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of all 1987 movies. Many 1987 movies became legendary with box office receipts to back it up. Some became cult classics. And some 1987 movies were so bad, they were good. And well. some we're just plain bad.

Travel back in time with us, and enjoy, Time Warp: 1987, The Movies, 30 Years Later.

Good Evening Episode 7.5 – “The Lodger” Radio Play and Hitchcock and Truffaut Part 2

September 15, 2017
00:0000:00

One of the premier drama programs of the Golden Age of Radio, was subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills" and focused on suspense thriller-type scripts, usually featuring leading Hollywood actors of the era. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 still exist.

Suspense went through several major phases, characterized by different hosts, sponsors, and director/producers. Formula plot devices were followed for all but a handful of episodes: the protagonist was usually a normal person suddenly dropped into a threatening or bizarre situation; solutions were "withheld until the last possible second"; and evildoers were usually punished in the end.

On the second presentation of July 22, 1940, Forecast offered a mystery/horror show titled Suspense. With the co-operation of his producer, Walter Wanger, Alfred Hitchcock received the honor of directing his first radio show for the American public. The condition agreed upon for Hitchcock's appearance was that CBS make a pitch to the listening audience about his and Wanger's latest film, Foreign Correspondent. To add flavor to the deal, Wanger threw in Edmund Gwenn and Herbert Marshall as part of the package. All three men (including Hitch) would be seen in the upcoming film, which was due for a theatrical release the next month. Both Marshall and Hitchcock decided on the same story to bring to the airwaves, which happened to be a favorite of both of them: Marie Belloc Lowndes' "The Lodger". Alfred Hitchcock had filmed this story for Gainsborough in 1926, and since then it had remained as one of his favorites.

In the fall of 1962, whilst The Birds was in post-production, François Truffaut carried out extensive interviews with Alfred Hitchcock at his offices at Universal Studios. The interviews were recorded to audio tape and the content eventually edited down into Truffaut's Hitchcock book.

Although Truffaut could speak a little English, he hired Helen Scott (of the French Film Office in New York) to act as the translator for the interviews.

Truffaut had intended to quickly publish the book of the interviews, but the first edition wasn't published until several years later (1966 in France and 1967 in America). To bring the book up-to-date, Truffaut conducted further interviews to discuss Marnie and Torn Curtain.

In 1984, Patricia Hitchcock donated a set of the interview tapes to the Margaret Herrick Library, where they are now part of the Hitchcock Collection. Although Truffaut claimed that the recordings lasted 50 hours, the surviving tapes — which cover the 1962 interviews — last for less than 26 hours.

Research by Janet Bergstrom has made clear the fact that the book often does not contain a verbatim transcript of Hitchcock's responses to Truffaut's questions.

The audio tapes of the interviews have not been released commercially. However, portions of the tapes were used for a French radio broadcast by the station "France Culture".

Nearly 12 hours of the interviews were broadcast on French radio as a 25 part series. Each episode runs for just over 25 minutes.

Transcriptions are available for some of the parts.

Childhood through to his early years in the film industry.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 50: Norm’s BRAW Trip to SCOTLAND!

September 5, 2017
00:0000:00
Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast
Episode 50: Norm’s BRAW Trip to SCOTLAND!

Kevin and Norm have reached EPISODE 50! FIFTY!! FIVE-OH!!! And...they have decided to celebrate with a SUPER-DUPER-SIZED feature interview covering Blood of Kings co-host Norman C. Lao’s BRAW trip to Scotland. Kevin began this trend…traveling to the Highlands and visiting so many special shooting locations in Scotland and we covered his trips in detail on Blood of Kings Episodes 7 and 8.

Now it is Norman’s turn to recount his (and Carol’s) tales of touring the magical country of Scotland. In his own personal words Norm summarized his feelings thusly, “This was the TRIP OF A LIFETIME! I am so humbled and grateful that I had the opportunity to visit Scotland and especially many of the places that are dear to my heart. This has been such a blessing and a gift and I owe so much of this trip to my lovely Carol who planned and organized a TON in preparation for this trip. The people are amazing, the food is incredible, the WHISKY of course is beyond amazing and plentiful...

...but it's the HISTORY that is just beyond words. This country has been wracked with war and strife and conflict and so much of that amidst all this natural beauty and wilderness is just an irony that only can be felt when you close your eyes and reach out with your senses...haunting...and beautiful at the same time. Thank you Scotland for sharing your soul with me. I look forward to seeing you again soon.”

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 49: CIMOLI’S CHOICE: Take Back the Night Pt. 2 The Commentary

August 15, 2017
00:0000:00

Please join Mike "CIMOLI" Sellers and Norm as they continue their "deep dive" study of TAKE BACK THE NIGHT with a full-length episode commentary. Once again, as many of the most powerful episodes do - Take Back the Night raises so many complicated and interesting points about how HIGHLANDER approaches the blessing or curse of Immortality.

Do you think MacLeod was being hypocritical towards Ceirdwyn bout "revenge solves nothing" - especially with all of the revenge he's exacted on HIS enemies. Or do you think Duncan is really starting to feel weight and guilt of all of those he has killed in his personal crusades?

In many ways, we felt that this episode was a spiritual predecessor to Season 5’s Forgive Us Our Trespasses as we continue to study Duncan’s lust for revenge after the aftermath of Culloden. What would Ceirdwyn have told Duncan in light of Stephen Keane’s damnation of Duncan’s crimes? Would SHE have turned his words back on him? Would she have been able to have bridged an easier peace between MacLeod and Keane?

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 48: CIMOLI’S CHOICE: Take Back the Night Pt. 1 The Retrospective

August 9, 2017
00:0000:00
On this very special CIMOLI’S CHOICE episode, we have the Blood of Kings editor extraordinaire Mike Sellers who was really excited to delve deeply into one of his favorite episodes of all time: Take Back the Night!

In his own words, “Not only am I a sword nut, but I'm a bit of a history buff. I didn't take classes in college, I went to art school. So any history knowledge I have picked up is from my own research. Give me swords, history and a strong female character and I'm all in.”

One of the key elements in this episode is the aspect of “Mortal versus Immortal FRAILTY” and how Immortals DO have the ability to weigh and judge and continue their crusades over the generations, whilst mortals who share their lives amidst the game are always in harm’s way. Like Ingrid in The Valkyrie...DO Immortals have the right to become judge, jury and executioner because they have the ability to risk more to do so? More importantly...have the time to maintain and foster that ever-burning grudge spanning decades if not centuries?

Another reason why both Mike AND Norm love this episode is because of its close connection with Highlander: THE COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME where CEIRDWYN was one of the more interesting Immortal Personalities (or PERSONAS) to play as she relied heavily on the strength of her allies, much like she did in her episode Take Back the Night

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 47: HIGHLANDER ROCKS: QUEEN - A Kind of Magic

August 2, 2017
00:0000:00
QUEEN is one of the most signature Rock and Roll bands of ALL TIME and certainly the most ICONIC within the world of HIGHLANDER. From their signature bombastic opening title track "Princes of the Universe" in March of 1986, QUEEN cemented their sonic legacy amidst the lore and legend of Highlander decades over with that very same thematic title song anchoring the historic six season run of the television series. It is almost impossible and unfathomable to think of the Highlander universe without their music at the center and as the heart and soul of the franchise.

In early 1986, QUEEN recorded the album A KIND OF MAGIC, containing several reworkings of songs written for the fantasy action film Highlander and the close collaboration between QUEEN, Highlander director Russell Mulchaey and original score composer Michael Kamen fostered an incredibly creative environment producing one of the greatest UNOFFICIAL movie albums of all time!

Please join your co-hosts Kevin and Norm, along with their special guest and Highlander/80’s aficionado Erin Gill, as they usher in the very first HIGHLANDER ROCKS themed episode to Blood of Kings. Discover their love for QUEEN, the tracks that ALMOST made it into the album, and even your podcasters favorite tracks. And please forgive Norm for his singing because in Highlander…THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE…and that the ONE and ONLY...Freddy Mercury! Enjoy!!!

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 46: BoK Fan Choice: THE VALKYRIE Part 2: The Commentary

July 26, 2017
00:0000:00
One of the things that Kevin and Norm love most about having created the Blood of Kings Podcast, is the growth of the amazing HIGHLANDER Fan Community on Facebook and Social Media. Listener and fan interaction is incredibly important to promoting new discussions in all aspects of the Highlander universe. One BOK fan in particular, SHAWN DEMPSEY, inspired Kevin and Norm to take a deeper look into one of his favorite episodes: Season 5’s THE VALKYRIE.
Please join Kevin and Norm as they continue their "deep dive" study of THE VALKYRIE with a full-length episode commentary. Also, please let us know what YOU think about Ingrid "choosing" to become the aspect of the Valkyrie from ancient legend; to be the judge, jury and executioner of those who are to be spared and those who are to be slain. Do Immortals have the right to "abuse" their gift and thus...shape the world of mortal men through the use of that power?

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 45: BoK Fan Choice: THE VALKYRIE Part 1: A Retrospective

July 18, 2017

Shawn wrote to Blood of Kings and stated, "I like the episode THE VALKYRIE because I think it is one of the best written Highlander episodes. There are so many layers to this story. It plays on the old WHAT IF game: If you could go back in time and kill Hitler, would you? But in this case, if you know someone has the potential to be just as bad, should you eliminate them?"

Please join Kevin and Norm as they try to unravel quite possibly one of the most powerful questions that has been raised in the entirety of the Highlander lore and one of the most PERFECT examples of the possible ABUSE of Immortality: Having the time and opportunity to shape the world to one's making no matter the cost.

Good Evening: An Alfred Hitchcock Podcast Episode 5.5 – Hitchcock and Truffaut Part 1

July 17, 2017
00:0000:00

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 44: DESERT ISLAND CHALLENGE!

July 10, 2017
00:0000:00
In Fandom, we LOVE lists: BEST OFs, TOP TENs, FAN FAVORITES...you name it...we love ranking our fandoms and everything within those fandoms. On Episode 37: Getting to Know Your Hosts…Kevin and Norm played a game called DESERT ISLAND CHALLENGE and they decided to really expand the scope of this game for an entire podcast!

The rules of DESERT ISLAND CHALLENGE are really simple. The scenario is that you have packed up all of your worldly possessions and are sailing to a new land, similar to the Titanic, when disaster strikes and you only have ONE CHANCE to save only ONE CHOICE of...in this case All Things Highlander from sinking into the abyss. These choices will be the only choices you are allowed to toss into a lifeboat and live with for the rest of your life on a nearby Deserted Island. And yes...you will have a fully functioning entertainment there to enjoy your time alone LOL!

For this episode, we are going to start with the TELEVISION SERIES first because we feel that this is really much more difficult than the MOVIE SERIES because there are so many more options to choose from regarding just the television episodes. But fear not, in future DESERT ISLAND episodes, we will tackle all of the other areas of Highlander as well.

So with all of this in mind, we would like to also challenge all of you - our Blood of Kings listeners - to play along with us and let us know on FB, or TWITTER or on Social Media - your choices for the HIGHLANDER: Desert Island Scenario.

In this special edition of Time Warp, your hosts Kevin Reitzel, Kyle Wagner, Erin Gill and Tom Caldwell will cover the year in movies for 1987 Part 2. Last year we made a case for 1986 being the best year in movies. But we were challenged! Could 1987 eclipse 1986? We will celebrate and debate this throughout our 4 part special.

Welcome to Part 2 of 4 of the Time Warp: 1987, The Movies. In the episode, we will cover the movies released in the months of April, May and June of 1987. Here is a small sample of the many movies we will cover in Part 2 of Time Warp: 1987:
 -      The Secret of My Success

-       Beverly Hills Cop II

-       The Untouchables

-       Predator

-       Spaceballs

-       American Ninja 2: The Confrontation

-       The Witches of Eastwick

-       The Living Daylights

1987 gave us a great year in movies. On this special presentation of the Time Warp, here on the Fandom Podcast Network, we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of all 1987 movies. Many 1987 movies became legendary with box office receipts to back it up. Some became cult classics. And some 1987 movies were so bad, they were good. And well. some we're just plain bad.

Travel back in time with us, and enjoy, Time Warp: 1987, The Movies, 30 Years Later.

June 16, 2017
00:0000:00

Orphan Black is a show that does not hold back, including dealing with topics such as science vs religon, genetic modification, a humans right to play god, relationships of all kinds and also giving the viewers some of the craziest WTF moments in sci-fi history.   Led by the sensational performance of Tatiana Maslany Orphan Black has been something new and fresh over the last five years that even the most die hard of fans dont know what to expect each episode.

As we prepare for the 5th and final seaon of Orphan Black Join Norman, Kyle and guest Sestra Hayley Stoddart as we take a look back at the first four seasons of this show and what has made it so amazing to each one of us.  Then we take a look into what we think will happen in this final season.  Finally we share what we think are the best of the WTF moments of Orphan Black.  If you are already a member of the clone club we hope you join us for this great episode, and if you have not joined the club then what are you waiting for take a listen and get in on the Black.   Let's do this!

Welcome to the Fandom Podcast Networks special presentation of

Time Warp: 1987, The Movies, 30 Years Later, Part 1.

In this special edition of Time Warp, we will cover the year in movies for 1987. Last year we made a case for 1986 being the best year in movies. But we were challenged! Could 1987 eclipse 1986? We will celebrate and debate this throughout this 4 part special.

Welcome to Part 1 of 4 of the Time Warp: 1987, The Movies. In the episode, we will cover the movies released in the months of January, February and March Of 1987. Here is a small sample of the many movies we will cover in Part 1 of Time Warp: 1987:
- Mannequin
- Over the Top
- A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
- Some Kind of Wonderful
- Angel Heart
- Lethal Weapon
1987 gave us a great year in movies. On this special presentation of the Time Warp, here on the Fandom Podcast Network, we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of all 1987 movies. Many 1987 movies became legendary with box office receipts to back it up. Some became cult classics. And some 1987 movies were so bad, they were good. And well. some we're just plain bad.

Travel back in time with us, and enjoy, Time Warp: 1987, The Movies, 30 Years Later.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 41: SEE IT OR SKIP IT Part 1: Highlander the Series Season 1

June 7, 2017
00:0000:00
Rarely do Kevin and Norm take the opportunity to discuss the Highlander Television Series at such length and detail, but your Blood of Kings hosts wanted to take a very specific look at Highlander SEASON ONE with fresh eyes and a fresh perspective and weigh-in, per episode, on whether you should SEE IT - OR SKIP IT! This is PART ONE of our review and we cover the SEACOUVER first half of the season from The Gathering to Band of Brothers; the episode that changed everything in Highlander Season One.

THANK YOU to JOHN MOSBY for allowing us to read the Season One Episode summaries from his book FEARFUL SYMMETRY: The Essential Guide to All Things Highlander and you should have this with you as we are evaluating these episodes. You can find FEARFUL SYMMETRY: The Essential Guide to All Things Highlander Amazon.com. Please support John and this book because it really is the ultimate resource for Highlander fans.

This particular fun podcasting format was inspired by Norm’s friends Bill Smith and Dan Davidson who on their podcast TREKGEEKS, review Star Trek seasons in this very same manner and advise to their listeners regarding which episodes are worth their viewing time and those that can be set aside.

We would LOVE to hear from all of you out there in the Blood of Kings listening audience to see if you agree or disagree with our list on this episode so please make sure to get in touch with us!

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 40: Happy ONE-YEAR Anniversary Blood of Kings!

May 29, 2017
00:0000:00
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY BLOOD OF KINGS! Today marks the ONE-YEAR anniversary for Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast on the Fandom Podcast network.

As Kevin and Norm look back on their humble beginnings, one scene in Highlander came to mind haha…

“How did this happen for God’s Sake?” - Connor MacLeod
“Why does the sun come up...hmm...or are the stars just pinholes on the curtain of night? Who knows?” - Juan Sanchez Villa Lobos Ramirez

Kevin and Norm already had a bit of a Highlander background before starting the Blood of Kings podcast in earnest; easing into it with previous shows like the 5 Fandom Flashbacks and 1 Special Movie Commentary.

39 Podcast Episodes and 3 Kingmaker Specials later…along with several liters of whiskey, tons of melted cheese, disco fries, trading card packs and hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of books, dvds, blu rays, swords, t-shirts, themed vacations, sword fighting and bullwhip classes - Kevin and Norm have FINALLY scratched the surface of where they want to take Blood of Kings and guess what? You…our fans and supporters…are invited along for the ride!

This week on Blood of Kings, co-hosts Kevin and Norm are joined with Watcher agents in training Mike Sellers and FPNet Founder Kyle Wagner, to discuss Blood of Kings "The One-Year Anniversary Show.“ This entire year-long journey started with a very fortuitous phone call last January of 2016, when Kevin reached out to Norm with an extremely brilliant idea for the Fandom Podcast Network; to create a show solely focused on the Highlander franchise! And the rest is Watchers Chronicle History!

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast An Evening At Joe’s: Norm’s RANCHO INDALO FLASHBACK!

May 25, 2017
00:0000:00
Hello Blood of Kings fans! Please enjoy a very informal discussion here at the place where everyone knows JOE’s name! Kevin and I finally had the opportunity to kick back here at Joe’s, ordered some snacks and drinks and FINALLY discussed my weekend at RANCHO INDALO which happened last November 18th-20th, 2016.

Anthony and Mary DeLongis’ Rancho Indalo IS a FULL ON training facility, set in Canyon Country right outside of Santa Clarita, CA (north of Los Angeles). They have 4 gorgeous horses at the ranch, for various riding programs and excursions. Anthony is fully equipped to train and teach all styles of martial arts with a variety of weaponry at his disposal. He is an extraordinary teacher and was able to communicate very quickly and efficiently with me, so that we could maximize the most out of our training sessions. Also...Mary DeLongis is the most AMAZING CHEF and her cooking is worth a trip to the ranch! Lastly, being able to meet Forged In Fire's DAVE BAKER who lives nearby was just the icing on the cake!

After listening to this show, I hope that I have inspired many of you to visit Rancho Indalo. It has made such a profound impact on me, not just because I am a fan of Anthony's work, but because it is such a lovely place to visit, run by two amazing people who have an incredibly deep and infectious passion for what they do. If you have the means and the desire and a WILLINGNESS TO LEARN (very important), seriously consider visiting Rancho Indalo to train and spend time with these two fabulous people. I truly look forward to visiting again.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 39: BoK Fan Choice: SHADOWS Part 2: The Commentary

May 17, 2017
00:0000:00
One of the things that Kevin and Norm love most about having created the Blood of Kings Podcast, is the growth of the amazing HIGHLANDER Fan Community on Facebook and Social Media. Listener and fan interaction is incredibly important to promoting new discussions across Highlander fandom.

Blood of Kings fan Jill Berticus inspired Kevin and Norm to take a deeper look into one of her favorite episodes: Season 3’s SHADOWS and this Blood of Kings podcast continues Kevin's and Norm's deep dive study with an in-depth commentary as the episode unfolds.

SHADOWS also directly addresses one of the key points in Highlander the Series: Can Immortals find happiness in a normal life whilst trying to survive within “The Game” and can Duncan and Anne move past being able to TRUST in each other?

Thank you everyone for participating on the Blood of Kings Facebook page.  Any comments, questions, suggestions or critiques are welcome.

And don’t forget about our #highlander101 contest and how you can enter your chance to win John Mosby’s FEARFUL SYMMETRY. Details how are…well, you will just have to listen to the show :)
