Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 38: BoK Fan Choice: SHADOWS Part 1: A Retrospective

May 10, 2017
00:0000:00
One of the things that Kevin and Norm love most about having created the Blood of Kings Podcast, is the growth of the amazing HIGHLANDER Fan Community on Facebook and Social Media. Listener and fan interaction is incredibly important to promoting new discussions in all aspects of the Highlander universe. One BOK fan in particular, Jill Berticus, inspired Kevin and Norm to take a deeper look into one of Jill’s favorite episodes: Season 3’s SHADOWS.

After reviewing this episode, Kevin and Norm can easily see why Jill Berticus chose this as one of her favorites. This episode combines a great many aspects of what makes for a quality Highlander episode; especially the MORAL ambiguity haunting Duncan MacLeod and the guilt that John Garrick is able to tap into to drive Duncan towards the edge of his own sanity.

This episode also sheds a very pointed light on whether or not Immortals can indeed find happiness in a normal life whilst trying to survive within “The Game” as Duncan and Dr. Anne Lindsey’s blossoming relationship is put to the ultimate test: TRUST in each other.

Thank you everyone for participating on the Blood of Kings Facebook page.  Any comments, questions, suggestions or critiques are welcome.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 35: Deckbuilding 101 with the Highlander Collectible Card Game

April 20, 2017
00:0000:00
Time to dust off all those stacks of Highlander collectible cards you have been holding onto for all these years !!! On this episode of Blood of Kings, Norm and special guest host Mike “The Immortal Cimoli” Sellers will be discussing both the FIRST and SECOND EDITION of the Highlander CCG and how to build a playable deck as we start tuning up for convention and competition season on the road to where all gaming journeys meet: Gen Con 50! SPECIAL THANKS to Steven Rice for joining us on this episode!!! Steven is a long time Highlander CCG, developer, player, veteran and contributor and currently helming the Blood of Kings CCG Facebook page.

The last time we discussed the Collectible Card Game was FIRST on Part Four of the Highlander Fandom Flashback, and THEN on the TWO PART Episode on Blood of Kings called "It's All in the Cards" - Blood of Kings Episode 5 and 6. Those episodes discussed a lot of the general history and basic strategy of the card game but we really want to get into some more advanced theories on this episode and that leads us to building a proper and competitive Highlander CCG Deck.

We hope you enjoy this episode and if you would like to share your Highlander CCG experiences with us, please feel free to visit the Blood of Kings CCG Fandom page on Facebook and join the conversation. Who knows…maybe you can share a few amazing strategies with us as well.

Couch Potato Theater: Tron Legacy Commentary

April 20, 2017
00:0000:00

Welcome to the latest episode of Couch Potato Theater as we close out are look back on Disney's Tron Franchise.  In 2010 almost 30 years after the orginal Tron came out the sequal finally came in the form of Tron Legacy, perhaps one of the most visually stunning movies of all time.  However even a full all out marketing blitz by Disney and an amazing soundtrack by Daft Punk could get Tron Legacy in the black, much like the original Tron film it has a very strong cult following but numbers did not translate when it came to the box office.  Join Kyle Wagner and Kevin Reitzel as they return to the grid to bring you a commentary of Tron: Legacy and why both of them feel it might be a superior film to the original Tron.  Grab your popcorn hop on the couch and try not to get Derezzed!  End of Line.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 34: KURGAN RISING…A Big Finish Audiobook Review

April 14, 2017
00:0000:00
“Everyone has a Bogeyman…”

Norman & Kevin are proud to introduce this episode of Blood of Kings as they highlight ANOTHER of the Highlander BIG FINISH Audio books  - KURGAN RISING - written by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright, and produced and distributed by Big Finish Audio. Adrian Paul returns to his iconic role from the Highlander TV Series as Duncan McLeod. This story takes place 5 years after the events of Highlander: Endgame and in very many ways, re-opens old wounds as Duncan is unwillingly maneuvered into doing the ONE thing that Immortals are NEVER to do: Fight on Holy Ground.

Along with a tour de force performance by veteran voice actor Toby Longworth, KURGAN RISING is an incredibly complex story, weaving in and out of canonized lore, and exploring…or exploiting…many of Highlander’s most signature elements - most notably the consequences of breaking tradition.

Very special thanks to Blood of Kings fan Daniel Jacob Horine for his suggestion that Kevin and Norm should take a closer look at this particular story and how it applies to challenging the lore and canon of Highlander.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 33: Surviving The Game: a.k.a Highlander 101

April 3, 2017
00:0000:00
Norm was recently asked a very interesting question from a friend and listener of Blood of Kings, “I really like listening to your show…but I just don’t get all of the CONCEPTS of Highlander. I don’t get what it’s all about sometimes…”

From it’s very humble cult beginnings in 1986 with the signature Christopher Lambert film, to celebrating Highlander’s 31st birthday this past March 7th - and now looking forward towards celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 25th anniversary of Highlander: The Television Series in October in Los Angeles…HIGHLANDER is still going strong and there is an amazing resurgence in the fandom. BUT, there is a lot of LORE that has been developed for this franchise these past 30 years. How does one keep track of it all? Well...let's start with the basics or "HIGHLANDER 101."

As Blood of Kings continues to grow in fans and followers, Kevin and I felt it was a good idea to refresh all of our listeners, especially those NEW to the Highlander franchise - to the basic framework and architecture. Many of us are long time veterans of the lore, stretching all the way back to 1986. BUT some of us are NEW to the game and we wanted to take this opportunity to review what you need to know to fully understand Highlander.

The Road to Wrestlemania 33 with Michael Morris

April 1, 2017
00:0000:00

Kevin is off this week as he is working with a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world, or it is a snake handlers convention they say Cobra and awful lot.  However fear not because WRESTLEMANIA is upon us and Kyle has recruited Michael Morris to come on and talk all things Wrestlemania.  Will the show live up to the hype? how bummed is Kyle that it is in Orlando but like Celebration he will miss it because of the tax trap he is in.  Will Michael Morris reveal his broken name??  Who knows? but listen and find out as they go for the tag team titles in the latest edition of Culture Clash with no disqualifications!  (Editor Note Kyle had to do this show out of studio so it could get out timely so we apologize if the sound quality is a little off this week.)

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 32: Listener’s Choice: Mortal Sins Part 2: The Commentary

March 27, 2017
00:0000:00

One of the things that Kevin and Norm love most about having created the Blood of Kings Podcast, is the growth of the amazing HIGHLANDER Fan Community on Facebook and Social Media. Fan interaction is incredibly important to promoting new discussions in all aspects of the Highlander universe. One fan in particular, Vince Stefanelli, inspired Kevin and Norm to take a deeper look into one off Vincent’s favorite episodes: Season 3’s Mortal Sins.

This episode of Blood of Kings continues Kevin and Norm's deep dive study on Mortal Sins with an in-depth commentary and insight in real-time as the episode unfolds. Throughout the commentary of this episode, Kevin and Norm can easily see why Vince Stefanelli chose this as one of his favorites.

This episode combines a great many aspects of what makes for a quality Highlander episode; especially the MORAL question and dilemma plaguing and haunting Father Bernard.

This episode also sheds a very pointed light on whether or not Immortals can indeed find happiness in a normal life whilst fighting for their own survival within “The Game”.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast KINGMAKERS Episode 3: John Mosby and Carmel Macpherson

March 18, 2017
00:0000:00

In early December 2016, a very powerful teaser image was released to the Highlander fan public on Facebook; multiple copies of the word “Gather” in a circular “ring”. Needless to say, the Highlander community’s interest was instantly piqued! Shortly after…the HLWW or Highlander WorldWide logo appeared in the center of that “ring” of “Gather” - or GATHERING - and accompanied by the phrase “Twenty-Five Years Can Seem Like A Lifetime” - the teaser began to make sense.

Finally, the plans of the 25th Anniversary Highlander Convention were announced and a surge of Quickening level energy cascaded throughout the fanbase and across all of social media. Details were somewhat limited due to all of the hard work that was being invested behind the scenes.

On this very special episode of KINGMAKERS on Blood of Kings, we are so incredibly honored and privileged to have on both John Mosby, author of FEARFUL SYMMETRY: The Essential Guide to All Things Highlander and Carmel Macpherson, PRESIDENT of Highlander Worldwide to discuss the most current developments for the Highlander 25th Anniversary Convention! Joined by your FPN co-hosts, Kevin, Kyle and Norm, John and Carmel discuss how this convention started to take shape, what has been set in the planning stages, many of the “hopes” for the convention and discuss the “WHY NOW?” about producing this con on the 25th anniversary of the television series.

PLEASE NOTE: As of the release date of this podcast - March 18th, 2017 - only ADRIAN Paul, ELIZABETH Gracen, DAVID Abramowitz, JIM Byrnes and F BRAUN McAsh have been confirmed. During the course of the show, many wishlist names are mentioned but only THESE five celebrities have been CONFIRMED. More details will come as the planning stages continue. John and Carmel are hard at work behind the scenes trying to make sure the guest list is robust and an incredible opportunity for all of the fans.

Cloud City Casino's Michael Morris is back on the Clash to join Kevin and Kyle as they Discuss all things Kong: Skull Island (SPOILER WARNING!!!) we go into the film in Buy it, Stream it or Unsee it.  We also use Michael's extensive knowladge of Godzilla to discuss the stinger at the end of the film.  In news we talk about the new Wonder Woman trailer and is this movie getting to much pressure to save the DC Universe, will also debate the news that Warner Brothers is thinking about doing a Matrix reboot as well as what is happening over at Marvel with the early bad buzz on Iron Fist and all the Thor Ragnarock news as well.  Then Kevin pulls a bit of Nic Cage goodness from the Movie Vault as he brings us the 2007 film Next.  We got Wonder Woman, Kong, Nic Cage and Michael Morris all in the same show, plus Kevin has not seen V.  Let's do this thing!

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 31: Listener’s Choice: Mortal Sins Part 1: A Retrospective

March 15, 2017

After reviewing this episode, Kevin and Norm can easily see why Vince Stefanelli chose this as one of his favorites.

Please join Kevin and Norm as they dive deeply into Mortal Sins, and as they also discuss a milestone in the Blood of Kings community, announce The Raven contest winner and continue the academic pursuit of whether or not Nakano was a true Sorcerer or was he just an “illusionist”. Enjoy!

Time Warp: The Lost TV of the 1980’s

March 14, 2017
00:0000:00

Inspired by FPNet's own Kevin Reitzel and his 1986 Flashback specials comes change and fun as the Fandom Flashback has become the Time Warp where we go back into the past and take a look at a defining show, moment or something that had a huge impact on Fandom.  In this, the first trip into the Time Warp Kyle leads Kevin, Norman and Davis on a look back at the lost TV Shows of the 1980's.  Everyone remembers the A-Team, Dallas, L.A. Law and many other TV staples of the 1980's.  However these shows are the shows where maybe they are still back there in the cobwebs of your mind or you have forgotten them all together.  Do you remember Street Hawk? Amazing Stories? The Master? Voyagers? Join us on this journey through the warp, find out if Kyle can stump the guys, Is Kevin a member of the Max Headroom Cult, can Davis make any action figures from any of these shows? and is norman secretly working on a new career as a singer of TV Themes?  All these questions as well as TV shows you might go that really never exisited (but oh you would be so wrong).  Let's Enter the Warp and see what mysteries will be uncovered!

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 30: Highlander: The IDW American Dream #1

March 8, 2017
00:0000:00

Highlander…the cult classic fantasy film from 1986 returns to the pop culture spotlight in a new comic book series from IDW Publishing. Highlander: The American Dream was first teased to the world of fandom in November of 2016 that sent "quickening level" shockwaves through the Highlander fan community as we were presented with the possibility of an actual PREQUEL to the events that led up to The Gathering in 1985.

Released on February 22nd, 2017...Highlander: The American Dream #1 reunites us with many familiar characters from the original 1986 feature film; including most importantly both Connor MacLeod and Rachel Ellenstein. However, this time we are re-introduced to a character who in the 1986 movie was only featured by way of mugshot and a police report. Osta Vaslek was one of the final six and a character, who until now, was shrouded in mystery.

Please join Kevin, Norm and our resident comic book aficionado and Blood of Kings editor Mike Sellers as they delve deeply into a SPOILER HEAVY review of this comic book; the first in a series of stories set in Connor’s recent past. As with all extensions of the Highlander lore - your Blood of Kings team did their homework, discovered many interesting aspects of the story and stumbled upon a few narrative choices that still make Norm go “Hmmmm…” Enjoy!

Culture Clash: A Tribute to Bill Paxton

March 4, 2017
00:0000:00

Everyone knows his face even if you might not know his name. (Most of you do know it)  One of the most accomplished and well respected if maybe not even underrated actors of our Generation died much to soon at the age of 61 but we all have a movie we remember him in.  It could have been Hudson in Aliens (perhaps his most famous role), Chet in Weird Science, His turn as Morgan Earp in Tombstone, perhaps it was stormchaser Bill Harding in Twister or even as Brock Lovett in Titanic.  Bill Paxton was in a movie we loved and for most of us many movies or TV show.  In this episode of the Culture Clash we pay tribute and express our love and admiration to Bill Paxton.  Mostly though we are here to say thank you.  Please join Kyle, Kevin, Norman and Erin as we remember the great Bill Paxton.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 29: The RULES of the GAME

March 1, 2017
00:0000:00

“Why does the sun come up? Or are the stars just pin holes in the curtain of night...who knows? What I do know is that because you were born different, men will fear you... try to drive you away...like the people of your village. You must learn to conceal your special gift and harness it until the time of The Gathering. When only a few of us are left, we will feel an irresistible pull towards a far away land... to fight for The Prize. We must fight until only one remains. You are safe only on Holy Ground. None of us will violate that rule. It's tradition.”

- Juan Sanchez Villa Lobos Ramirez to Connor MacLeod circa 1541

One of the most important (yet inconsistent) elements in the history of the Highlander franchise is understanding the RULES of the Immortal Game. Why can there be only ONE? What if the last two who remain no longer want the ultimate prize? Why can some Immortals like Kane choose to ignore the “tradition” of Holy Ground, when even the most ruthless of Immortals like the Kurgan do not? When did challenge by way of single combat become an established rule of The Game? Who enforces these rules and what are the penalties of ignoring them - especially Holy Ground?

Join Kevin and Norm as they try to make sense of a very convoluted topic with the help and feedback from members of the Blood of Kings Facebook page. As difficult as it was trying to make sense of the Rules...one thing is for certain: In the end, there can be only FUN!!! Enjoy.

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 28: The Sorcerer’s Final Dimension Commentary!

February 21, 2017
00:0000:00
In Episode 27: The Movie with Two Names?…Kevin and Norm took a very deep dive back into Highlander 3: The Final Dimension;  the SECOND sequel to the cult 1986 classic. BRAND NEW Highlander director Andy Morahan tried very hard to re-capture many of the touchstones that made the first movie the cult phenomenon that it remains to this day with a very valiant directorial effort. However, in the final analysis, the overall connective tissue feels nothing more than a forced redirection to get the franchise back on track from it’s unfortunate de-railing in Highlander 2 - the THEATRICAL cut.

Join your Blood of Kings co-hosts as they have created a full commentary review for you and re-discover how certain parts of the film actually DO really propel the lore forward, moments of the film that were deliberately created to disavow Highlander 2: The Quickening, how certain signature moments were truly a blatant rip-off of 1986 and even raise a few very important canonical issues that challenge the overall canon of Highlander - specifically the rule of Holy Ground. And keep your eyes peeled for the GREATEST WEAPON CAMEO IN HIGHLANDER!!!

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast Episode 27: The Movie with Two Names?

February 13, 2017
00:0000:00

Highlander 3: The Final Dimension was a very valiant theatrical effort. It tried very hard to re-capture many of the touchstones that made the first movie the cult phenomenon that it remains to this day. It even succeeded in creating some interesting extensions to the established canon.

It does have some very strong and signature HIGHLANDER moments, but in our opinion, it’s the overall connective tissue that really strains the Highlander audience’s ability to reconcile this as nothing more than trying TOO HARD to redirect the franchise from what was the de-railing years before in Highlander 2 - the theatrical edition.

Join Kevin and Norm as they rediscover Highlander 3: The Final Dimension and delve deeply into the subject matter of the film. From the perspective of a fresh re-watch, Kevin and Norm discover how certain parts of the film really work and propel the lore forward, moments of the film that were deliberately created to disavow Highlander 2: The Quickening, how certain signature moments were truly a blatant rip-off of 1986 and even raise a few very important canonical issues that challenge the overall canon of Highlander - specifically the rule of Holy Ground.

Oh and yes...if there is one thing that is consistent about Highlander 1 through 3...it's that iron pipes make all the difference in surviving the game!

00:0000:00

Blood of Kings: A Highlander Podcast: Episode 25: REBORN as The Raven!

January 23, 2017
00:0000:00
On this episode of Blood of Kings, Kevin and Norm continue their "Search for the Raven" with an in-depth look at REBORN - the PILOT episode of Highlander: The Raven with Elizabeth Gracen taking center stage as AMANDA; our favorite cat-burglar from Highlander: The Series.

With Adrian Paul moving onto different stages of his career, and the future of the Highlander property in flux, the producers tested several actresses throughout the sixth and FINAL season of Highlander: The Series and ultimately decided that Elizabeth Gracen's AMANDA was THE one to carry on the Highlander television tradition  into the future. Executive Producer Bill Panzer said, "The existing (and popular) character of Amanda felt like a strong choice with many benefits. Television being television, we did look around, but Amanda was always the dream choice."

Join us as we take a closer look at the launch of a completely new era of Highlander and the challenges of extending a very much and deeply beloved franchise. Was Highlander REBORN with "The Raven"? That is something we hope you will try and help us discover along the way as you listen to this episode. ENJOY!
